College Admissions
College Admissions â From there, I started cultivating this list of essay topics, character traits, experiences, and even some random sentences that I ended up using in my final essay. Varying your word choices keeps your copy fresh and holds the readerâs attention. Above all, look for words or phrases that can be cut out of your essay to leave just the very best of what you have to say. When youâre nearing the end of your essay, itâs time to put the finishing touches on it with a separate closing paragraph. The conclusion is where you bring together all of the elements you previously mentioned in the other sections. This hook should entice the reader by hinting at the essayâs theme in a way that makes the reader want to read more. The hook can be funny, witty, or a simple hypothesis. You want to use focused writing with a consistent tone and diction throughout the essay. This part of an essay is the first presentation of your ideas. There are a number of elements you want to include in your introduction to encourage the reader to continue reading. First of all, youâll need a âhookâ to open your essay. Bathrooms are in that sense a microcosm of the macrocosm. Bathrooms also can be a truly dramatic crucible, as the playright Arthur Miller has demonstrated in his dramaturgical magnum opus by that title. Okay, maybe Iâm overreacting â" but I cannot for the life of me understand that award. âMost Originalâ always let me down, and as a result, I hated to be original in any context. Donât stress out if you donât really have a hook. My friend Alex has a second-degree black belt in judo. She was thinking about doing an essay on her beloved Calvin and Hobbes. Get the College Application Blueprint for Ivy League experts' guidance to help you build a successful college application. It was then that I decided to no longer bite my tongue. My third essay draft started with the idea âIâm not afraid to speak up. I refuse to stay silent.â I brainstormed how I came to have this character trait and intersections of it with my Asian-American identity. I ultimately told the story of slam poetry night at Governorâs School, the first time that I really pushed myself out of my comfort zone to speak about a racial issue. My final draft is multifaceted, showing my personal growth in context of the frustration and empowerment rooted in my Asian-American identity. It combined parts of my initial drafts into something completely new. Other topics that I ultimately rejected for my Common App essay actually went to be the focal point of other essays. There were numerous times when I opened up a Google doc and stared at a blank screen, only to inevitably get distracted by Facebook and not get anything accomplished. As I read, it is as if the tempest of my thoughts is spelled out on paper. The overflowing sense of hyper-reality in Tim OâBrienâs words of warfare spills into my world. His words somehow become my words, his memories become my memories. Despite the high speed of the bullet train, my mind is perfectly still â" trapped between the narrative of the book and the narrative of my own life. In my hometown of New Haven, Connecticut, where normality wasâ¦well, the norm, I tried to be a typical student â" absolutely, perfectly normal. I blended into crowds, the definition of typical. I became a person who refused to surprise people. Unsettled, I turn to my ever-present book for comfort. Today it is The Things They Carried by Tim OâBrien, already worn and slightly crumpled. They say the best books tell you what you already know, resonating with your own thoughts and emotions. No, you donât have to mention each one explicitly, but your conclusion should cover most of what you addressed in your essay, and make a good clean end to your narrative path. In a dramatic and powerful conclusion is where you want to spell out, in a bold manner, any ideas youâve been hinting at throughout the essay. When you have a good hook in your introduction, you increase the chances that your essay will be effective. For some essay projects, evaluating the audience is important, but for others, itâs best to follow the general writing strategies you see in mainstream writing, periodicals, and professional literature. You want to use any details that will help the reader identify the topic and the scope of the essay.

John Hopkins University has a page full of essays that worked; one in particular, entitledâBreaking Into Carsâ, showcases what the writer learned from his experiences well. This second version isnât going to win any awards, and it definitely needs more work, but the specificity is there. If the person reading this essay had no idea about marching band or music, this description would give them enough detail to empathize with the writer. It helps you get all the obvious stuff out of your head first. When you begin to write an essay, itâs normal to fall back on clichés. Act Writing And Sat Essay Requirements
Act Writing And Sat Essay Requirements We have found that the #1 reason for essay procrastination is that students donât feel confident in getting started â" i.e. they arenât sure what to write about and how to structure it. Here are 5 essential traits of a compelling college essay. Your essay doesnât need to have all 5, but college admissions officers look for at least one of these traits or possibly two. Once a student picks one or two of these to focus on in their essay, they are on the writing path to a stellar essay that describes exactly who they are and why they would be an asset to a college. You will need to do this to receive any of the accommodations and support services that you might need to be successful. To help youth applying to college navigate the college essay in order to submit their best work with their college application. We've cooked up a bunch for you, based on, uh, who you are slash what you care about. Your goal should not be to include all of your accomplishments and activities . The most engaging essays tell a story and have a clear focus. The manner in which you like to engage in learning. We donât all process the same information the same wayâ"and colleges donât all deliver it in the same manner! This is especially true if you are an experiential, hands-on learner who values testing ideas. Be prepared to provide evidence of this learning style in your supplemental essays. Most colleges and universities look for five traits in a student essay. Think of the college application process as a video game, and the dreaded college essay is the dragon that needs to be slayed. The overall workload here is really dependent on your college list, so if your list isnât as ambitious, some of the timelines above might not apply to you. The main point here is that getting a head start and planning your essay workload is essential to limiting how stressful the college application process needs to be. A thoughtful and detailed narration of a difficult time in your life tells far more about you than a list of competitions won and honors achieved. Julie helped my daughter take her essay from a disjointed, boring story to an essay with great flow and flair that college admissions readers must have enjoyed enough to accept her into a very competitive program. A thoughtfully crafted essay and a clean, clear application can make a tremendous difference in the college admissions process. Resist the temptation to buy the âbest college essaysâ book. Watch that you are using the same tense and point of view throughout your essay. Always read your essay over for grammatical and spelling errors one last time before you submit your application. Trust that you are interesting and have powerful stories to tell. It will only contribute to the âparalysis by analysisâ you might be experiencing. The genius for your essay rests within you, not an essay someone else has written. Selective colleges are most interested in students whose sense of purpose is illustrated in their recognition of compatible learning opportunities on their campuses. Make sure to get these done early so that you give yourself a lot of time to work on the remaining regular decision supplemental essays. If you chose your essay prompts correctly, hopefully you can use an essay or two from here for some of your remaining school essays. UC application deadlines are at the end of November, so they should be your next priority if you havenât worked on them already. There are eight prompts to choose from, and you pick four. It doesnât matter too much which prompts you choose, so try to choose prompts that you can reuse other essays to answer. Do not make things up or use things that have happened to other people. A strongly written essay about a fight you had with your parent and how you solved the problem will be much better than a made-up story. All colleges take integrity and honesty very seriously. Any uncovered dishonesty would have serious consequences on your future. Anyway, writing about something due to of personal experience will be much easier than writing about something you have had to make-up. If you choose not to disclose your disability in your essay or college application, remember, you may still disclose at any point after you are accepted into the school. When they ask the âwhy do you want to come hereâ question, they are not interested in knowing whether you can recite their institutional superlatives. Rather, they want to see if you have made the conscious connection between your sense of purpose and the opportunities that exist within their educational environment.
Virtual College Exploration
Virtual College Exploration All students have various life experiences and ways of looking at the world. They want to read about the down times when a student has failed. Sure, any student can list achievements, but thatâs not what the admissions gurus are looking for in an essay. They can clearly demonstrate the synergy that exists between themselves and the institutions in question. All are historical elements of your college applications. Well established over time, they determine your general competitiveness in the selective admission process. His patience, skill, and ability to connect with students assure that every essay will improve a studentâs chances for acceptance. Please note that College Essay Solutions will not, under any circumstances, write an essay for a student. From the first brainstorming session through the Final Final Final draft, our approach to college essay tutoring is thorough, tireless, and customized to your specific needs. Writing your application essay shouldn't be the hardest part of getting into college. Our College Essay Navigator does just that and offers several options that will meet all of your studentâs essay writing needs. The best way to get started is to help the student decide what to write about in an essay. Like I mentioned before, continue to look for opportunities to reuse drafts for other schools. You should be reaching critical mass around this time of having an essay draft for just about any prompt that a school will give you. Trust me, a little work now will go a long way towards boosting your confidence and overall preparedness throughout this process. If youâre getting any help from counselors or teachers for editing your essays, keep in mind that many of them will stop checking their emails once Christmas break starts. Make sure to get things into them ahead of time and be respectful of their time. If you didnât get your drafts to them in due time to give feedback, donât get upset if they tell you that they wonât sacrifice their vacation to help you. Youâll just have to adjust word counts or the focus of the learning point a little bit. If youâre really hesitant to work on essays because official updated prompts for your schools havenât come out yet, then working on the UC essays can be a safe alternative. The UCs rarely change the prompts and even if they did change them, the changes would probably be announced by now. The Common App essay prompts are not requirements; they are ideas designed to stimulate a creative thought process. Focus instead on the key messages you want to convey and develop a storyline that illustrates them well. There is a very good chance an essay developed in this manner will meet at least one of the listed essay prompts. Selective institutions often employ supplemental essay prompts to sort the whimsically submitted applications from those that are more intentional. Just like it says, some students are still not satisfied by what theyâve come up with, but think theyâre really close to finding the right topic. Remember, your main essay is the only essay that you put THIS much work into because of how important it is. In order to give an essay a proper chance in the editing process, it needs to be crafted to the vision that you have for it. Instead, take the reader between the lines to better understand you, as a thinking person. Colleges value diversity of thought in their classrooms. The essay is your opportunity to reveal that element of diversity that can be found uniquely within you. Youâll hear a lot from âexpertsâ about taboo topics (sports, death, disease, divorce, pets, etc.) and generic essays on related topics are not a good idea. But the personal essay, doesnât have to be that terrifying a beast if your student holds the keys to writing one that will stand out from all of the rest. Also, I know that procrastination and writing fatigue are real obstacles in this process. You guys arenât essay robots able to churn out quality drafts on a strict schedule. This timeline wasnât meant to be followed exactly. But that doesnât mean that setting goals and putting pressure on yourself early on isnât going to help you get the ball rolling. On the other hand, if you have experienced something intensely personal and profoundly meaningful within such a topic, help the reader to know how the experience affected you. Too often students get stuck on the choice of a prompt and never get to the essay itself.

Sample College Application Essays
Sample College Application Essays This seemingly insignificant event caused him to think about why he loved art and philosophy over science and math. Quite simply, the best college essays make a personal statement and give admissions officers a window into your soul. Shared by admissions staff, these essays stand out, they say, because the student voices shine, helping the school get to know them. U.S. News has compiled several college essay examples that helped students get into school. The problem is when a student seeks so many opinions from trusted adults. It's highly unlikely that any of these people have actually read college essays before â" and certainly not as a member of a college admissions committee. But a few simple tips, some introspection and insight into what admissions officers are looking for can help ease the pressure. News has compiled several college essay examples that helped students get into school. Itâs also easy to fall into the comparison trap and begin worrying that your essays will never be as good as these examples. Remember that the sample essays colleges are posting are the BEST essays from among the thousands of students they admit. So, most accepted studentsâ essays are not this exceptional. And of course, it goes without saying that you should NEVER copy or imitate someone elseâs essay. Many students write essays that are too clichéd or shallow, or too impersonal and uninformative. For some students, the essay itself will be cause for rejection. I fell into the trap of reading a bunch of âsuccessfulâ essays that were published online. Reading them made me feel like I had to have experienced a traumatic event or done something spectacular for admissions officers to notice my essay and application. When I started the whole essay writing process, I honestly felt really stressed out about feeling like I havenât had experiences that were âworthyâ of the Common Application essay. If youâre applying to schools that request supplemental essays or do not accept the Common Application, you may have several different essays to write. Sample essays can provide you with some great inspiration, and valuable insights into how to write a great essay. However, be careful not to get so caught up reading other peoplesâ essays that you neglect to start your own. Iâm surprised when students have trouble writing their college essays. Students have keen powers of energetic observation about themselves and the world around them, but ask them to share any of those ideas in a college essay, and the silence speaks volumes. Writing an essay is something students learn to do in school from a fairly young age, but it is a skill that must be perfected over a number of years. The college application essay is the true test of those skills and of your ability to present an accurate picture of who you are. According to an article published on Time.com, college application essays arenât as important as they are cracked up to be. These types of pieces can come off negatively, and sometimes a teenagerâs perception of a life changing event is much different than that of a college admissions reader. I once had a student who wrote about how he observed a water droplet while on vacation. If you try to make your essay sound like someone elseâs, it will end up sounding fake and awkward, and will NOT work to your advantage. Contrary to popular belief, students should not write about a horrible life event that changed their life forever. The fact is that most of us have not had such a life changing situation before the age of 18 (so donât make one up either!). Even if you have had such an experience, donât write about it. But I literally ended up writing about a time I performed a poem. One of my favorite Common Application essays is about a trip to Costco. Honestly, it doesnât matter what you write about, but rather, why you write about it and what youâre trying to convey with it. Evaluating a college essay, much like any piece of writing, is highly subjective. Two people might both like the same movie or song, but for totally different reasons. As college application deadlines near, students across the country are hoping that their essays will earn them a spot at their dream school. For most students, it takes about 10 hours to write a good college essay.

College Essay Help & Tutoring
College Essay Help & Tutoring But by opening up and sharing your story, you can show scholarship providers, colleges and universities who you are, and why youâre deserving of their scholarship. These are just a few of many scholarship essay prompts that require you to look internally, to answer a question, solve a problem, or explain a scenario in your life. Use our free and easy online tool for counting characters, words, sentences, paragraphs and pages in real time, along with keyword density and reading level. Can someone explain to me why so many people are obsessed with word count and page count? If youâre a writer, shouldnât writing well be the most important thing? Why do writers seem to obsess over word count and page count? There are instances when youâre given an assignment, not by word count, but assigned by the number of pages. For example, âWrite a paper four pages long.â If you get an assignment to write four pages, one of the first questions that will likely come to mind is, âHow many words are in four pages? If your teacher tells you to write a five-paragraph essay, then write a five-paragraph essay! However, within those guidelines, find room to express something that is uniquely you. Stop trying to write a good essay (or even a âgood-enoughâ essay). Instead, write aninterestingessay, write an essay you think is fascinating. And when youâre finished, go back and edit it until itâs âgoodâ according to your teacherâs standards. It depends on how large or small your letters are. I average 240 handwritten words per college ruled sheet. This would depend heavily on how big/small you write. itâs like different fonts take up different amount of space on a page, so does your specific handwriting. The best way to know your per page word count would be to look at past pages and count the number of words you write for each page. Give yourself the freedom to write as if youâre circling around your topic rather than making a single, straightforward argument. Then, when you edit, you can make sure everything lines up correctly. In college, I discovered a trick that helped me go from a B-average student to an A-student, but before I explain how it works, let me warn you. This technique ispowerful, but it might not work for all teachers or professors. As you research your essay topic, search for this story of surprise, and donât start writing until you can find it. Every once in a while, I would write a really good essay, but mostly I skated by with Bâs and A-minuses. Nowadays, many students will rely on the Internet over books to find the information they need. You can search for whatever you need in a matter of seconds, and there is a immense span of information available. Be sure to research your topic exhaustively and watch out for any dodgy facts. Don't miss this article in which our student advisor walks you through the 10 things you MUST NOT DO if you're looking for a good grade. All of them will lose you marks so don't let these things slip into your next essay. Model UN is a great extracurricular for students looking to learn more about politics, current events, or international relations and for students who want to improve their public speaking or debate skills. At the conference, students representing many countries and issues come together to debate their positions and agree on solutions. Every step of Model UN requires teamwork, whether itâs dividing up research assignments, writing a position paper, or creating a speech. itâs time consuming, but any other estimate is bound not to be accurate since itâs so dependent on your handwriting. I have a writing assignment in school, and it is always helpful to know how many pages I will need. I think that since teachers donât give page assignments but only word count assignments, itâs difficult to imagine how many pages that will be. Why is everything word count these days instead of page count? When I was in school when I was younger, all assignments were page count. â If you need to figure out words per page, you can use a words per page calculator. Use tip #4 and write five original sentences that could be turned into an essay. That means that the best essays are about surprise, âYou probably think itâs one way, but in reality, you should think of it this other way.â See tip #3 for more on this. Every story is about conflict and change, and the truth is that essays are about conflict and change, too! The difference is that in an essay, the conflict is between different ideas, the change is in the way we should perceive those ideas. Yes, you need to follow the guidelines in your assignment. The truth is, education is an opportunity many people in the world donât have access to. Itâs a gift, not just something that makes your life more difficult. I donât want you to make the mistake of just âgetting byâ through school, waiting desperately for summer breaks and, eventually, graduation. The thing I regret most about high school and college is that I treated it like something Ihadto do rather than something Iwantedto do. You donât have to stay in one place and write from beginning to end.

Better Writing With Gail Shister
Better Writing With Gail Shister For years Iâve been interested in the street artists and musicians in downtown Austin who are so unapologetically themselves. As a result, Iâve become more open-minded and appreciative of unconventional lifestyles. I became resourceful, fixing shoes with strips of duct tape, and I even found a job to help pay bills. I became as independent as I could to lessen the time and money mom had to spend raising me. Students are often surprised to discover how broadly major-related skills can apply. But if you choose this path, youâll likely need to use either an uncommon structure or next-level craft to create a stand-out essay. While this sounds simple, the quality of your essay will depend on the strength of your examples and your insights. A montage essay can come together in many different ways. Imagine that each different part of you is a bead and that a select few will show up in your essay. Theyâre not the kind of beads youâd find on a store-bought bracelet; theyâre more like the hand-painted beads on a bracelet your little brother made for you. As with the Type A essay, complete the brainstorming exercises described at the start of this chapter. No matter which structure you choose, these exercises help. For the purposes of this section, your future goal or career is the theme that connects all the parts of your story. The Type D essay section delves more deeply into other ways of weaving thematic threads. He paid attention to the needs of my mom, my brother, and me. But our prosperity was short-lived as my step dadâs chronic alcoholism became more and more recurrent. When I was eight, my younger brother Fernandoâs birth complicated things even further. As my step-dad slipped away, my mom continued working, and Fernandoâs care was left to Jose and me. I cooked, Jose cleaned, I dressed Fernando, Jose put him to bed. This is a great way to figure out the âbonesâ (i.e. structure) of your essay. A rectangular black and red sticker displaying the theme of the 2017 event. Living without a father meant money was tight, mom worked two jobs, and my brother and I took care of each other when she worked. For a brief period of time the quality of our lives slowly started to improve as our soon-to-be step-dad became an integral part of our family. Take special care to complete the Feelings and Needs Exercise, as it can be a powerful essay-outlining tool. Next, the author used the Narrative Structure to give shape to his essay. First, the author brainstormed the content of his essay using the Feelings and Needs Exercise. Without a father figure to teach me the things a father could, I became my own teacher. I learned how to fix a bike, how to swim, and even how to talk to girls. TED gives me the opportunity to help other youth understand new perspectives, by exposing them to the diversity of Austin where culture is created, not just consumed. Once youâve written down your qualities, examples, and at least 1-2 insights, try outlining your essay. To keep things simple, one example and one insight per paragraph. Help the reader understand which experiences have shaped the qualities youâve listed. First, itâll make for a much more interesting story; second, itâll show that youâve truly developed these qualities. Go to a college's website and click on a major or group of majors that interest you. Sometimes theyâll briefly summarize a major in terms of what skills it will impart or what jobs it might lead to.
